Spanking children is it right?

I decided to start this thread after reading a number of articles on the matter and the fact to the topic has been mentioned a bit in the media lately.

Wondering what peoples thoughts are on this topic is it wrong or right? Do you think it is a parent's right to spank their child, within reason, for misbehavior? How much do you believe is too much?

This is a sensitive issue at the moment isn't it? As my daughter is 12 now there is no need for smacking but when she was younger i would give just a light tap on the bum as a corrective measure when it was required. I guess it is up to the individual parent as to what their belief is on this subject.

An interesting one.... I don't have kids of my own but have worked with them for 20 years or so and have actually never had to spank a child (although faced with gobby teenagers have felt the urge believe me..haha!)..Also different cos as you know... it is against the law to strike a child in a work situation like that.

My sister has two girls and has spanked them - I think there is a big difference between belting a kid when you lose your temper and using a smack on the leg or bum in a controlled and well thought through manner.

I have also had discussions with parents of "special needs" kids about this and it's a hard one - especially when faced with some extreme behaviours...

I think that it is up to a responsible parent to guage whether the smack will actually teach the child anything as opposed to making the adult feel better.

Sometimes I think it is better to give misbehaving kids a quick smack on the bum rather than yell at them or use sarcasm or verbal abuse. Parents should have the right to do this but not to beat their children with belts, canes or electrical leads.

I think it is ridiculous for parents to be reported for giving their child a smack when other parents who beat their children badly enough to break bones continually get away with their abuse.
