Self Harm Issues!
Hi everyone,
My daughter 14 years of age who has Autism is having bad episodes of Self Harming... this involves cutting herself only superficially. I was wondering if any parents have encountered this kind of situation?? and if so what strategies have you come up with to help your child??
Any help would be much appreciated...Natalie...

As an adult with Aspergers who has done much the same thing, it was partly out of curiosity to see what would happen and mostly because of frustration in expressing emotions and dealing with other's emotions.
I think if it were possible to ask your daughter why she cuts, it would be a good idea to do so. She might not be able to explain easily though as it took years for me to realise why I was doing it.
As a teenager or young adult, if I got into a fight with somebody and didn't receive any sympathy about being upset, I would cut sometimes because it was so frustrating not being able to get any help.

It is very interesting what you have said. Would you say that you did it to seek attention coz you weren't being shown sympathy? I am very interested to hear more.
