My daughter is 12 years old and in her first year of high school. Recently she has been coming home talking about the "cool kids" and how she wants to be one of them. She has also told me how these so called "cool kids" have offered her cigarettes and how she has almost been tempted to participate.
What should i do?
How have other parents handled this?

Jennie28,
I have en counted the "cool kids" ever since my 14 year old daughter entered secondary college. Everyday she would come home wanting to be like them...only so she could have friends and fit in because the teens would bully her because of the Autism .
As for the cigarettes my daughter was also tempted to participate..but i sat her down and gently explained to her what smoking would do to her body as well as everyone elses around her. I showed her visually rather then go on in conversation..went through magazines..went down to shops pointed out the cigarette box and the pictures they have advertised now and she just turned around look at me and said.."eeeew....yuk mum I'm not doing this".
I found that in some situations visually showing her does the trick and others a sit down and gentle conversation does wonders. |

I compiled a list of strategies that teens can use to combat peer pressure in the general discussion forum. Here is a link to that info help it helps a little Jenni.
