Just wondering has anyone read anything about autistic children and their physical appearance. I have read that children with autism look normal in appearance to an untrained eye yet there are some physical characteristics of this disorder.
Some of these characteristics include
- The corners of his/her mouth are low when compared with the center of the upper lip.
- The tops of the ear flop over slightly.
- Ears are also lower and have a square shape.
- The head is normal to large in size.
Has anyone read anything on this and whether it is true or not?

How interesting.... are you the parent of a child with autism? I am new to the forum and having a look around the posts.... excellent...
Well...I have been working with kids on the spectrum for over 22 years now and yes I can usually tell something is going on after a few minutes contact with child or young person.
This of course comes through experience and being able to observe sometimes tiny movements or slightly off kilter speech patterns etc.
A few things I have noticed over the years about physical appearance though....:
EYES... lots of kids on the spectrum have beautiful eyes...sometimes described as deep, deep pools. They are usually a distinct stand out feature... what I love most is when you are making a "connection" ( I work with DIR/Floortime as the mainstay of my play therapy work) and those eyes suddenly come alive and you get the sparkle of joyous reciprocal communication...
MOUTH... now here is an interesting observation. I have noticed this most in girls I have worked with .... an underbite and sometimes a very high arch to the roof of the mouth... hmmm...wonder if anyone else has noticed this....?
LONG TOES..... sometimes also very long delicate fingers but definately very long toes....again...anyone else observed this??
I wonder if any formal research had been done re physical characteristics....I am gonna find out ....
